During 2003–04, one of the underperforming spinners was dropped for the cricket tour of Australia for the Border Gavaskar Trophy. The then Indian Captain knew that if this player was dropped it would be a career ending blow.
The Captain fought with the selectors for the player till the last day before the team was to leave. In the end, the selectors told the Captain that if the spinner doesn’t perform they will look for a spinner as well as a new captain.
The Spinner returned with 24 wickets, the highest in the series and helped India retain the Border-Gavaskar trophy!
That summer, India had the best ever Australian trip in history. The spinner finished that season as the highest wicket taker on the ICC calendar.
The spinner was none other than Anil Kumble, who went on to become one of the greatest spinners in the modern cricket history. It was our beloved dada, Sourav Ganguly, who trusted Kumble when no one else did.

But during matches, he was my loudest cheerleader. It is only because of my coaches that I am where I am today. A big thanks to all the educators present here that are coaching millions of children all over India!”, shared Sourav Ganguly.
